How to Reach Wayanad from Bangalore
We explored Wayanad using two different routes for a better experience.
Route While Going (Fast & Smooth)
- Bangalore → Mysuru → Gudalur → Sulthan Bathery → Kalpetta
- Smooth 2-lane highway
- Passes through forest areas
- Forest check posts may record your vehicle number
- Faster and more comfortable drive
- Best option if you want to reach quickly.
Route While Returning (Scenic Hill Route)
- Kalpetta → SH 33 → Mananthavady Road → Mysuru → Bangalore
- Hill roads with forest sections
- Some patches in poor condition
- Slower driving due to curves
- If lucky, you may spot animals like deer or elephants.
- Important:
- Do not stop inside forest areas
- Follow forest rules strictly
- Drive slowly and responsibly
3-Day Wayanad Itinerary
Day 1: Vythiri & Meppadi (Nature + Viewpoints)

- Banasura Sagar Dam

Best Areas to Stay in Wayanad
1. Sulthan Bathery
- More hotel and food options
- Good connectivity
- Around 23 km from Kalpetta
👉 Best for: Food variety and budget stays
2. Kalpetta (Recommended)
- Central location
- Easy access to all major attractions
- Many budget-friendly hotels

- Clean and calm environment
- Swimming pool available
- Surrounded by greenery
⚠️ Food was mostly Kerala-style, so vegetarian options were limited.
3. Vythiri
- Premium resorts and forest stays
- Less explored by us
Food Experience in Wayanad 🍽️
Breakfast: Great variety of South Indian dishes
Recommend: Mysore Veg Cafe
Dinner: Good North Indian food options available in town
Recommend: Krishna Bhavan Pure Vegetarian Restaurant
Vegetarian travelers may face limited choices in some places.
Tip: Carry snacks, fruits, and ready-to-eat food for backup.
Detailed Place Experience 🌄
Pookode Lake
- Time: 1–2 hours
- Freshwater lake surrounded by forest
- Paid parking available
Activities:
- Pedal boating
- Walking and photography
👉 Visit in morning to avoid crowd
Edakkal Caves
- Time: 2–3 hours
- 1.5–2 km uphill trek
- Final climb includes steep steps and rocks
👉 Visit early morning for better weather
⚠️ Not ideal for elderly unless comfortable with trekking
Phantom Rock
- Time: ~1 hour
- Natural skull-shaped rock formation
- Close to Edakkal Caves
Soochipara Waterfalls
- Time: 2–3 hours
- Limited entry tickets so check before going or buy it
👉 If tickets are sold out:
- You can explore private waterfall spots nearby with local help
Banasura Sagar Dam
- Time: 2–3 hours
- Largest earthen dam in India
Activities:
- Speed boating (highly recommended)
- Kayaking and pedal boats
👉 Book speed boat slot in advance ( UPI may will not work there due to network problem)
💡 This is truly a “must-visit, paisa vasool” place in Wayanad.
